Barry Burke says the issue has been going on for a number of years with waste coming up in his garden.

Mr Burke said there has been straw, raw sewage, disinfectant and milk emerging at the back of his property on numerous occasions.

As a result of this he said the garden has been ruined and he can no longer grow his raspberries and blueberries.

As well as this he can no longer let his grandchildren out to play in it.

His house is located on Dunoon Drive, Smithills.

He said: “Raw sewage has been coming up in my garden. It has happened three or four times.

“I have had people from Bolton at Home here.

“One time they said it was because it had been raining.

“They wanted to put top soil on top of it.

“I said never, it will not do anything, it will just cover up the mess.

“I want them to sort my garden out.

“My grandkids are not able to play in the garden any more.

“I had raspberries and blueberry bushes before this.”

A spokesperson for Bolton at Home said: “We understand this issue has caused Mr Burke distress and frustration, and we’ve offered support.”

“Our emergency teams have attended the property on the same day when issues have been reported to us, referring the matter on to Bolton Council’s drainage team and, in turn, United Utilities as appropriate.

“We cleaned Mr Burke’s garden and renewed the soil stack outside the property in 2021, and earlier this year we again offered to clean paths and garden surfaces, and replace topsoil that had been affected.

“United Utilities has responsibility for the main drainage running behind Dunoon Drive and will determine if any remedial work is required to the system. We’ve advised Mr Burke that any further issues with the drain would need to be reported to United Utilities.”

A record-breaking giant onion weighing almost 9kg has been displayed at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show.

I’m looking at pictures of a prizewinning half-stone aubergine and a leek as tall as a human. This is the world of giant veg, a sport where the cliché is that mid-to-late-life-crisis men on allotments compete to show theirs is bigger than the next inedible specimen.

It's surprisingly simple, too.
